What’s the Difference between Boilers, Radiators, and Furnaces?
Understanding your system can help you troubleshoot issues before they happen. In a sentence, boilers heat water and send it through radiators in the house while furnaces heat air and force it through the house via ducts and out the vents.
Boilers & Radiators

One of the most common types is Forced Hot Water “FHW” boilers. FHW boilers heat water and send it through hydronic piping loops to baseboard radiators – which heats the space. Radiators act as the delivery mechanism of the hot water and as the name suggests, ‘radiate’ heat to warm up the room.
Furnaces
Most modern homes use Forced Hot Air “FHA” Systems for heating. An FHA furnace has burners that are controlled by a thermostat. When turned on, the unit pulls air through it, heating it up and pushing it through the ducts and out the vents throughout the home. You can save on energy costs by simply closing vents in parts of your house where you don’t spend much time in during the winter. Just make sure you keep heat in areas of pipes to avoid frozen pipes.
