9 Tips for Beating the August Heat and Getting a Good Nights Sleep
The August heat and humidity are in full swing and that means hotter, stickier nights. It’s no secret that getting a good nights sleep, during hot nights is more difficult. In fact, it often seems nearly impossible to get comfortable at night, when the heat index is on the rise.
The good news is that there are some simple tricks you can use, to beat the heat and finally get some much needed rest. By using a few of these ideas, you’ll finally be able to enjoy the benefits of a full nights sleep.
1. Take a Cool Shower
Before hopping into bed at night, try jumping into a cool shower first. Taking a cool shower will lower your core body temperature and allow you to get a jump start on falling asleep, before the heat starts to bug you.
2. Don’t Blow Dry
Since you’ll be coming out of a cool shower, go ahead and leave your hair damp. Damp hair will help keep your core temperature cooler longer. So you can reach a deep sleep, without having to deal with the uncomfortable August heat.
3. Spread Out
August is a good month to be a bed hog. When you sleep curled up in a ball or with your limbs close together, you generate more body heat, causing more sweat and comfortability issues. Instead, try sleeping with your limbs spread out and open, to prevent a sweaty situation. Additionally, cuddling is generally a bad idea, when battling the August heat.
4. Water is Your Friend
A great nights sleep starts with staying well hydrated. By drinking eight to nine ounces of water before bed each night, you can help prevent dehydration and the inevitable sweating and rise in body temperature that comes with it.
5. Keep it Loose
Tight, thick or heavy pajamas and the August heat are a bad combination. Instead, go for loose fitting pajamas, made of a breathable fabric for a more comfortable summer night.
6. Cool Your Sheets
Can you think of anything better on cold winter nights, then jumping into bed with sheets right out of the dryer? Well, the reverse is just as amazing on summer nights. Toss your sheets in the freezer a couple of hours before you hit the hay and thank us later.
7. Down Size
Large, fluffy pillows might sound like a good idea, but all of that extra stuffing and fluff will cause extra head sweat. Gross! So, when the August heat is filling the night air, swap that giant fluffy pillow, for a smaller, firmer one and let your head breathe easier.
8. Speaking of Downsizing
Large, heavy meals will have your metabolism working overtime, which will kick your core body temperature up. Try enjoying smaller, lighter dinners when the heat is unbearable. Your metabolism will run at a nice normal pace and you’ll be more comfortable.
9. Your Best Defense
Your best defense against the August heat is a well maintained air conditioning unit, pumping out cold air when the temperature reaches unreasonable levels. If you have concerns about your air conditioners performance, visit Trusttiger.com or call 1-866-TIGER70, to have a licensed technician inspect your unit.
Hang in there, the August heat won’t be here much longer and there are cooler autumn days on the horizon.
